The New York Stock Exchange (NYSE) has a history that goes back to 1792 when two dozen stockbrokers met on Wall Street and agreed to create an exchange to buy and sell various types of investments, including stocks and bonds.
The stock market normally opens at 9:30am EST and closes at 4:00pm EST.
NYSE bond market trading hours are Early Trading: 4:00 a.m. ET - 8:00 a.m. ET Core Trading: 8:00 a.m. ET - 5:00 p.m. ET. Late Trading: 5:00 p.m. ET - 8:00 p.m. ET
U.S. stock markets are closed on these days:
- Martin Luther King, Jr. Day – Monday, January 15, 2024
- Presidents’ Day – Monday, February 19, 2024
- Good Friday – Friday, March 29, 2024
- Memorial Day – Monday, May 27, 2024
- Juneteenth – Wednesday June 19, 2024
- Independence Day – Thursday, July 4, 2024
- Labor Day – Monday, September 2, 2024
- Thanksgiving Day – Thursday November 28, 2024
- Christmas Day – Wednesday, December 25, 2024
Additionally, stock markets will close at 1:00pm EST on:
- Wednesday, July 3rd, 2024 (prior to Independence Day). NYSE American Equities, NYSE Arca Equities, NYSE Chicago, and NYSE National late trading sessions will close at 5:00 p.m. All times are Eastern Time.
- Friday November 29th, 2024 (Black Friday). NYSE American Equities, NYSE Arca Equities, NYSE Chicago, and NYSE National late trading sessions will close at 5:00 p.m. All times are Eastern Time.
- Christmas Day Eve – Tuesday, December 24, 2024. NYSE American Equities, NYSE Arca Equities, NYSE Chicago, and NYSE National late trading sessions will close at 5:00 p.m. All times are Eastern Time.
Note: If a holiday falls on a Saturday, the stock market will normally observe the holiday and close on the preceding Friday. If the holiday falls on a Sunday, the stock market will normally be closed on the following Monday.
The bond market shares the same holiday schedule as the stock market with two additional holidays and with a few pre-holiday early closures.
